Living on a $10 daily budget

October 31st, 2006 at 12:53 pm

So....I am currently living on a $10 daily budget, that is, after I have substracted my fixed monthly expenses such as rent, cell phone bill, taxes, health insurance, and the alike.

My goal is to live within a 10 dollar daily budget for food and other misc. items. But is it possible? I guess I'll have to track my spendings and find out. I also have to mention here that I live with my girlfriend, and I often buy food for the two of us with my $10.

So, two people, and 10 dollars....okay..hmm...

I cook almost everyday. Usually I would spend about 97 cents on lettuce and about $1.50 on uncooked pork.

Today I managed to spend a total of $2.00 on food. I bought a whole lettuce and 3-coffee jello-thingie. That is roughly 200 yen in Japan. Which means, I am under budget today!! YAY!! How exciting!!

However, does anyone here have any good recipes? Something simple and easy? And healthy?

welcome to the site! let's see, inexpensive recipes... well, i guess it depends on what is a 'cheap' staple in your area: here, rice and beans are always inexpensive. and noodles, too.

the prices go down in you buy in larger quantities, rather than daily or weekly. do your grocery items go on sale in tokyo? if so, you may be able to save money on your current recipes by buying larger quantities less often.

Hello! welcome to the site! Here's one of my fave's...it's cheap (here at least) and cooks a lot so you cna have it leftover for several meals.

    Rice and Beans:

    2 c white rice
1 16oz can pink kindney beans
1 8 oz can black beans
    2 green peppers
    chilli powder to taste

Since I always have white rice and chili powder on hand, all I need to do is buy the two cans of beans, and the peppers, which is about $4.00 together...and I easily get about 4 meals out of this. If I'm feeling rich on a special day, I'll add in some cooked ground hamburger or turkey...depending on which is cheaper.

    Enjoy! Smile

See my blog for easy steamed fish. You could probably get veggies and fish for cheaper in open markets in Japan (not sure where they're located). If you like tofu, there's tons of things to be done with that! Simplest is just adding oyster sauce, sprinkle dried seaweed on top, then eat cold.

Does your 10$ a day include transportation and clothing. Good Luck I've lived on a similar system for years. I find that the trick is to make certain that your "allowance" is big enough to cover all of your expenses fairly comfortably otherwise it becomes extremely frustrating.

Experiment. Mix different foods, herbs and spices together. Spicing up food and adding things such as tomatoes can totally change the face of everyday meals.

    The Cottage Cheese Sandwich:

Take Cottage Cheese, throw in diced tomato, i table spoon to Thyme, diced italian tomato, half teaspoon of basil olive oil or some nice extra virgin olive oil, salt and ground pepper.
    mix mixture together

Toast 2 pieces of bread (slightly brown)

Put the mixture in some nutty grain bread (or of your choice).

Chow. Its simple, healthy, and tastes v. good.
